Supporting Children Through Bereavement

At Ryecroft Academy, we recognise that the loss of a loved one can be a deeply challenging experience for children and their families. Grief can affect children in many different ways and every child’s journey is unique.

Our Supporting Children Through Bereavement booklet has been designed to provide parents, carers, and school staff with guidance, reassurance, and practical information about how children may respond to loss. It aims to help adults understand the grieving process, identify ways to support children effectively, and access appropriate resources when additional help is needed.

The booklet outlines the support available within school, including emotional wellbeing provision, counselling and play therapy services, and strategies to help children feel safe, understood, and supported during difficult times. It also includes details of local and national bereavement organisations that can offer further support to children, young people, families, and professionals.

We hope this resource serves as a valuable guide for both families and staff, helping us work together to ensure that every child feels supported, cared for, and understood throughout their bereavement journey.
