During the first week of March, we held our STEM week at Ryecroft. Our theme was ‘Our Impact on the Environment’ and we set five challenges for pupils to complete during the week. Our pupils helped to clean up the school grounds and their local area through litter picking, learnt about recycling and found out how bees can help support the environment and local wildlife! Some of our pupils challenged themselves to have a ‘meat-free day’ and to reduce their electricity usage too.
Pupils were tasked with raising £2 for every challenge they completed and so far we have managed to raise over £200! Half of this money will go towards our conservation garden, which is being designed so as to have a positive impact upon the environment – for example, with wild flowers which attract bees and areas to grow our own fruit and vegetables. The other half of our money will be donated to The Woodland Trust – a charity which plants and protects trees in the UK. Trees are an important way for us to reduce harmful gases and tackle climate change.
