At Ryecroft Academy, we teach the National Curriculum for science, whilst also giving our children the opportunity to combine their science learning into other areas of the curriculum including mathematics, sports science, reading and English. Our approach to science ensures that our children are provided with a rich diet of opportunities where they can further develop their knowledge and skills. At Ryecroft Academy, we have an inquiring mindset around science. We encourage children to think and ask questions like a scientist both inside and outside of the classroom.

Our Science Curriculum Aims to:

  • Develop in our children an enthusiasm for science, so they can be inspired to pursue the subject as a specialism further on in their education and beyond.
  • Provide our children with a multitude of opportunities for engaging, hands-on scientific activities which will spark in them a love of scientific learning and discovery.
  • Encourage our children to respect the natural world, and actively consider the part they can play in conserving it.
  • Provide our children with the scientific knowledge and working scientifically skills necessary to ensure that they are well prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond.

Aspiration is one of our key drivers at Ryecroft Academy, and our science curriculum fosters in our children an excitement for their learning in this subject. We are passionate about educating children about the opportunities school can give them and what careers certain subjects or experiences may lead them to. We expose our children to the disciplines of science (biology, chemistry and physics) from an early age, helping them to understand the relevance of it to their lives. An example of this within our curriculum is looking at work from scientists past and present and the impact they have had in the world we live in today. We actively encourage visits from professionals in this field to further enhance our delivery of the curriculum and our partnership with the Farnley Academy enhances this work in our curriculum.

Communication and community are also key drivers of our curriculum at Ryecroft Academy. In science, children are encouraged to communicate using scientific vocabulary, this enables children to articulate their thoughts, predictions and findings accurately. Through our curriculum and enhancement activities, we encourage our children to consider their role within various communities, including: our school; their local area; and the wider global community. We pride ourselves as an academy in our work supporting our children to become global citizens. Our children are taught to respect the natural world, and to consider their role in conserving it, both now and for future generations.
