In addition to the six areas of Early Mathematics Learning, we also draw upon resources and guidance from Learning Trajectories—an evidence-based framework that outlines the developmental pathways children typically follow as they acquire mathematical skills. By aligning our curriculum with Learning Trajectories, we ensure that our teaching approach is not only informed by research but also tailored to meet the diverse needs of every learner.

NCETM – Six key areas of early mathematics learning

Please find below a selection of online maths games that are used in class to reinforce key learning. As they are accessible everywhere, online learning games provide a flexible and convenient way for students to practice and reinforce mathematical skills beyond the classroom.

In Key Stage 1 and 2, we follow the White Rose Education Mathematics curriculum, renowned for its innovative approach to teaching mathematics. Through a blend of hands-on activities, collaborative projects, and engaging lessons, our curriculum fosters a deep understanding of mathematical concepts while nurturing a love for learning.

Our teachers also utilise the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) progression materials to enrich and supplement their lessons. These resources, developed by leading experts in mathematics education, offer invaluable support in scaffolding learning, addressing misconceptions, and promoting mathematical fluency.

With the combined power of the White Rose Mathematics curriculum and NCETM progression materials, our students benefit from a rich and dynamic learning experience that caters to their individual needs and inspires them to reach new heights of mathematical excellence.

At Ryecroft Academy, we are committed to nurturing mathematical fluency in our students, and a cornerstone of our approach lies in developing proficiency in the 10, 5, and 2 times tables in Key Stage 1 and the rest of the times tables by the end of Year 4. Central to this journey is our innovative approach to times tables, which incorporates regular chanting sessions as a fundamental practice.

Research has unequivocally demonstrated that rhythmic chanting of times table facts significantly enhances children’s ability to memorise and recall them instantly. This rhythmic repetition not only aids in cementing numerical facts in memory but also strengthens neural connections, facilitating faster recall and improved mathematical fluency.

During our chanting sessions, students engage in lively and interactive activities that transform the process of learning times tables into an enjoyable and immersive experience. Through rhythm, rhyme, and repetition, students internalise times table facts in a fun and engaging manner, laying a solid foundation for mathematical success.
